Touchdown in Chengdu!

Landing in Chengdu, I couldn’t help but make comparisons of the service provided at the airport to Singapore’s own Changi. The airport’s staffs at Chengdu were nice, though it can be seen from their expressions. They got slightly impatient when they realized that I’m not fluent in Chinese despite my origin. However, they made an effort to converse in simple English and help me as much as they can.
Driving down the road, I
noticed that Chengdu seemed quite urbanized. The surroundings still have that
timely rural-feel to it with many rundown buildings and even those in the
process of construction are in common-sight. It was quite interesting to see this
because I barely see things like that in Singapore.
A huge construction site smack right in the middle of a junction is a common sight in Sichuan. |
Impressively, traffic runs
quite efficiently over here in Chengdu in spite of the fact that not everyone
uses the pedestrian crossings. The traffic police would be around to guide
directions and making sure that the traffic goes smoothly.
Something that fascinated me the most was that hardly anyone wears a helmet when riding a motorbike in Chengdu. Where in Singapore, you would have to wear a helmet, it seems like the traffic rules are more relaxed in here, yet everything seems to be just as safe as it was in Singapore. It was an amazing sight to witness.
Dude, where’s your helmet? |
